How to Link Your SIM Card with Your National ID Card (NIN) Using Your Phone

The Federal Government of Nigeria has mandated all telecom networks to ensure that their customers link their SIM cards with their National Identification Number (NIN). This initiative is aimed at reducing crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, and theft.

This guide will show you how to link your NIN to your SIM card using your phone, without needing to visit a service center. The process is simple and can be completed in just a few steps.

If you use a mobile application provided by your network, like the myMTN app, you can easily link your phone number with your NIN. After opening the app, you’ll find a section where you can enter your NIN. Once you enter the NIN, you will receive a One-Time Password (OTP). After entering the OTP, you’ll be informed that it may take one to two days to complete the linking process, and you’ll be notified once it’s done.

Alternatively, you can link your NIN to your SIM card directly through your phone by following these steps:

  • MTN: Dial *785#.
  • Airtel: Dial *746#.
  • 9mobile: Dial 2008#.
  • Glo: Send a text message with “UPDATENIN NIN FirstName LastName” to 109.

Remember to write “UPDATENIN” and your name in capital letters, for example, text “UPDATENIN 12345678901 MUHAMMAD ADAMU” to 109.
